A Fantastic Meal and Terrible iPhone Photos of It

Wednesday started out terribly.  I had planned to take the morning off to see the Babylon exhibition at the British Museum before it closes next week, but got caught up with work and ended up not moving from my desk all day.  We left the office around 7pm and headed straight up to town as  Tim and I were going out for dinner with Kathleen and Atom at a restaurant in Grosvenor Square called Maze. Maze is one of Gordon Ramsey's many restaurants but luckily the Chef is Jason Atherton.  The food comes in small tapas portions and they recommend you order 4 or 5 items or, you can do what we did and go for the 7 course tasting menu which was the best thing I've eaten at a restaurant in a very long time.  They were happy to do an entirely vegetarian tasting menu for Atom and we shamelessly photographed each course as it came out.

Several courses had 2 choices but what Tim and I had is below.  I really recommend going if you get a chance, the wait staff were discrete (not fussing over you), not stuffy (we came straight from work in jeans), happy to explain each course (and patient when it was just us left at 1am).  The sommelier actually recommended a very nice not over the top wine and the non alcoholic cocktails for those that weren't drinking were fantastic (I recommend the Blackberry one)

The tasting menu is £60 pounds per head for 7 courses so it's a treat but absolutely worth it if you're in London and a foodie

Iron bark pumpkin latte with braised duck, black truffle syrup and cep brioche (delicious and my favourite of the night)

Marinated beetroot, Sairass cheese, pine nuts and Cabernet Sauvignon dressing

Assiette of sandwiches, ‘BLT’ and croque monsieur (Tim had this.   The BLT is in the martini glass and is tomato consomme, veloute of lettuce and bacon on top!)

Slow cooked quail, marinated foie gras, raisin and saffron purée, pear and ale vinegar (Instead of the BLT. my first ever foie gras.  I decided not to think about it too much)

Bouillabaisse of Cornish red mullet, roasted scallop, garlic aioli and croutons (delicious)

Roasted hake in Parma ham, chorizo and pimento purée, squid paint (Tim had this instead of my Bouillabaisse)

Cornish lamb and tongue, salt marsh mutton shepherd’s pie, spring cabbage and mint jelly (shepherd's pie in the small crock pot.  The wine had started to kick in by now)

At this point I somehow forgot to take photographs any more.  We were presented with an additional course of apple caramel with ice granitee and a tiny cinnamon doughnut before the dessert

Coconut panna cotta with black olive caramel, white chocolate granité (for Tim)
‘Pain Au Chocolat’, chocolate ganache with caffé latte sorbet, vanilla bread and milk mousse (for me - his was nicer)

Wow, looks amazing... I'd much rather have 7 tiny yummy things than one big course...
