Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

I may be easily pleased or just easily excitable for a Friday but for those of you lucky enough to be running 8.0.1 or later (in Beta) you can now play with changing the theme of your Notes client.  IBM have come out with a handful of new themes (colours, standard fonts etc) which you can install to your client using the public widget catalog hosted on our server.  Here's how to do it
  1. The catalog is on www.noteswidgets.com but the Domino server name is Tranquility/TurtlePublic so you'll need a connection document to Tranquility/TurtlePublic using the address www.noteswidgets.com.
  2. In your preferences under 'widgets' enter Tranquility/TurtlePublic as the server name and widgetcatalog.nsf as the catalog name - it should fetch a series of categories when you apply it
  3. Choose the category 'Theme' to automatically install the theme feature
  4. Restart your client when prompted
  5. Now under your Preferences - Windows and Themes - you have new ones to choose from

This is my client with 'Natural' installed.  Much thanks to IBM for developing it and Mary Beth getting it on the public server.

Love the themes, but I miss themes with smaller font-size and/or anthoer fonts...

Great theme! And they are very easy to install following the steps you mentioned.

Thanks for sharing!

Running latest Notes 8.0.2 beta on Windows XP...

First time, I followed instructions to the letter, saw the categories, picked Themes, hit apply/OK, no restart prompt. Restarted manually, no new themes. Checked connections, noticed a pre-existing connection for the Tranquility server which appeared with a lotusphere-something hostname. Deleted that, cleared out widget server preferences, hit OK. Came back into preferences, re-entered widget server/nsf/category, hit OK, got a restart prompt of some sort that I can't remember clearly, then got this in the status bar:

"CWPPR0034E: The provisioning operation failed unexpectedly while processing the request. Some actions may have have completed, but results are unavailable."

Without restarting, checked Theme preferences not expecting any new entries, and indeed I did not.

Restarted manually. No new themes listed. Unchecked, re-checked "Themes" in widget category, clicked Apply/OK".

Saw a "Provisioning" something dialog saying something about "In progress" with a few buttons including, I think, something about "run in background". Went by too quick to get all of it.

Then noticed the same statusbar message AND one just before it that I missed earlier which said:

"Widget provisioning not successful. Check the log for details or contact your help desk."

Nothing in my local log.nsf

Restarted manually. This time taking a moment to ensure that the Teamstudio Snapper task was stopped as well by manually stopping it in the task bar. Then try to shut down mNotes in the same way, and either right before or right after that, with Notes nowhere in sight having already shut it down, I get the Notes crash dialogbox, which I let proceed until it finishes whatever debug recording it wants to do. At this point, Snapper appears off, but the mNotes icon is still in the task tray and mouseover reports "mNotes/mForms server closing down"

Going to reboot from scratch, clear out these new widget settings, restart Notes again manually, reapply widget settings, hopefully see what I'm supposed to as far as restart prompts etc., and report back.

whew...

Bummer you can't drag the xml for the theme over to the sidebar and have it work automatically

Nice! I like the Royal theme best so far. It's very cool to have themes available. Wonder if any UI wizards from the community will make more of them?

Cool! It's good to have themes back in Notes. I'm with Rob in that Royal is the best option so far. Funny how the default Notes theme still looks best - but it's good to have options.

Given what it takes to deploy that... you're going to need more than a UI wizard.

I'd like a nice deep purple theme and I'd send some time working out the proper colors, but I don't see how to bundle it all up.

Guess I'll unpack the root jar file and see if I can figure it out.

but, golly, can't we make it easier?

Hmmm.. the theme colors also impact Designer in 8.5. The color of the active frame border in the Notes client (not very prominent) becomes the filler for blank spaces in DDE and can be overwhelming.

OK - so just wasted a whole hour playing with colors, Windows themes, etc.

I can see great potential for this though!

It installed without error for me on 8.0.2 beta 2 on Windows XP Pro SP2.

I downloaded the extension to my desktop and then created a new themes widget with it in my widget catalogue. I then added the theme widget to My Widget. After asking me if I wanted to install some thingy from IBM, it went about downloading and provisioning it. It then asked for a reboot and after restarting all was well.

I agree, the Royale theme is the best of the bunch.

It's great to see themes being developed.

I'm disappointed as I can not connect to the Widget catalog or server at all.... Must be something dodgy on my machine but usual 'helpful' Lotus error message does not give any indication of where.

Oh well, enjoy to everyone else.

11Louise Hordicek  20/08/2008 04:33:09  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Since found out it is something to do with the proxy / internet service provider as another was not able to connect either.

Others in my team have reported that they can successfully connect when working from home.

12Gary Cousins  21/08/2008 07:40:38  Notes Themes - Contacts Issue

There's a big problem if you change your Contacts from List to Business Cards. After the change the mail client locks up and has to restarted. Functionality is restored by changing the contacts back to List after the restart.

Tested on Lotus Notes 8.0.2 beta 2 on Windows XP Pro SP2.

13Dag Skoglund  28/08/2008 15:42:21  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Just tested this and didn't work.

Got the exact same result as #3-Kevin...

Reopenend the prefs and deselected the themes-widget.

Opened the database "manually" from notes and located the themes-document. When opened, I just drag-n-dropped it to my widgets bar for installation. It then prompted me that the "things" it needed to install was unsigned (thus potetially dangerous) so I did what any "user" would do - clicked "Yes" anyway :-)

It then installed the widget w.out a problem and also gave me the "Restart"-dialog. Upon restart I was presented with the desired themes...

14Dag Skoglund  28/08/2008 15:43:57  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

To clearify:

I dragged-an-dropped the *XML-FILE* from the themes-document to the widgetpane...

15Roland Reddekop  03/09/2008 18:06:08  How to uninstall this widget?

I played with the themes...and they are pretty, but 90% of my users have requested red unread mail and I've tried editing the CSS files in the jar, but the changes are not taking. So how do I uninstall this widget? All the other widgets have a "remove component and actions" menu option. The remove menu is greyed out with this widget. Don't tell me I need to uninstall Notes to be rid of it.

16Roland Reddekop  03/09/2008 19:10:02  Figured out how to uninstall

To uninstall the themes widget, it looks like you need to switch back to toolbox.nsf. On restart, the themes widget will allow you to "remove component".

17Homyar  04/09/2008 20:10:39  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

After I added the widgets and restarted Notes, it just comes up as not responding. Closed all Notes related processes and tried to start it again but no luck.

18Homyar  04/09/2008 20:11:28  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Also it changed the title name from Lotus Notes to %product.name

19Andras Horvath  01/10/2008 22:18:43  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

I installed it with Notes 8.5 Beta 2. It works well. It is very easy to customize themes with Theme tool.

20Netbob  15/10/2008 20:54:51  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Nice themes. Now if I can just get this "page is not currently buffered" error when I try to make a new copy of an existing Db, I would be happy.

Royale is good.

21Palmi  19/10/2008 13:06:45  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

I have a Theme that i like to shear with you - Please look at this URL { Link } - This is a CSS file you can add to your notes -

I keep getting error "The Widget Catalog from server Tranquility/TurtlePublic will not be used because there were errors creating local replica for widgetcatalog.nsf". Any help?

26Jordan  26/06/2009 18:51:33  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

I get the same error as 25 - ideas?

Can these be posted publicly as a downloadable file?

27Samantha  05/08/2009 15:30:28  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

I got the message, "The Widget Catalog from server Tranquility/TurtlePu...rors creating local replica for widgetcatalog.nsf."

28Tim  23/10/2009 08:15:00  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Yep same error. Really disappointing, Not like we can go anywhere else for this sort of thing. Typical IBM and Lotus style. Make it so obscure that nobody can do it or find how to do it.

29Hogne B. Pettersen  09/01/2010 23:39:27  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Does anyone know if other themes will become available?

I so far adore the Natural (green) theme. And is it possible to create your own?

30Shyamsundar K  22/04/2010 05:59:53  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Can any one do help ?

31Peter Bueschking  09/06/2010 10:55:53  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Still the same error message also for me!

32Dag Skoglund  19/07/2010 10:41:45  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Sadly it seems as the "public" website these themes were posted at is no longer very public...

Still, one can find them as an installable plugin on OpenNtf: { Link }

Unless you are already familiar with installing plugins here's a brief instrux:

1) Expand the downloaded file (w. winzip, 7zip etc) and store them in "C:\theme\"

2) Click the Getting Started with Widgets toolbar button to start the wizard.

3) Click Features and Plugins and then click Next

4) In the Enter the URL ... field, specify the path and filename to the previously expanded file:

"file:///C:\\theme\\site.xml"

Please note the "extra" slashes/backslashes - it won't be able to read the plugins if this is not correctly entered...

5) Select the displayed entry and click Finish to install the themes.

It will ask you to restart notes and then you'll have the themes provided selectable in preferences.

Note! It did mess up my toolbar icons after initial restart but that sorted itself after a second restart...

Hello

Unfortunately IBM asked us to withdraw these Themes from the public site as they couldn't support them.

34Hedi Regaya  16/08/2010 03:51:01  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Very interesting position from IBM, but can we get some more details?

Do "theming" leads to bugs or instability in Notes?

35Guy  23/11/2010 18:20:29  Notes Themes Are Here ! I’m rocking a lovely green right now

Why in hell did they give us this feature to begin with? It's been around in several releases, but no one can use it. Either give us some themes, teach us how to create them, or just get rid of them if you aren't going to give us something we can use: IBM!

Have a nice day!
