Anyone going to Milan soon? I need pickled onions.

I just made my first ever Gibson martini, with pickled onions instead of olives as a garnish.

I haven't made one before because although I am a huge fan of pickled onions and pickled shallots, I always figured they would be disgusting in a martini.

However, when we were in Milan last week, we went to the Peck delicatessen and amongst the many delicious jars of tasty goodness we brought back was one of Sweet Pickled Onions.

We opened the jar this evening, and the onions are very much sweeter than your average pickled onion. This inspired me to maybe try them in a martini, and lo-and-behold I think they work really well. You do need a strong savoury flavour for a martini garnish, and these fit the bill. I wouldn't want to add vinegar to a martini and therefore a regular pickled onion wouldn't do, but these are spot on.

So my question is: Is anyone going to Milan soon? I need pickled onions.

Update: The onions are all gone. I didn't have that many martinis. I just ate all the onions. The martinis are partly medicinal. I am currently suffering through a nasty bout of man-flu, also known as H2N2, as its so bad.

Why not just pickle your own onions? There are lots of recipes and techniques (you might even try a Japanese sake/sugar type brine...)

I was in Milan airport yesterday, but didn't get into Milan itself. Sorry. :-(
