Sametime 8.5 Online Presence Failing

Gabriella Davis  27 September 2010 16:56:22
Over the past few months I've had several reports of customers with new 8.5 installs and online awareness problems.  These have ranged from people "blipping" offline and online again to everyone appearing entirely offline. The commonality appeared to be the new Presence Subscription service which in many cases wouldn't start at all.

IBM have now acknowledged the problem and offered a suggested fix which has worked in cases we've tried so far.  Basically the Presence Subscription has been designed to use 1024 kb of memory and that's simply too much resource on servers with less than 4GB RAM and a reasonable number of concurrent users.  Of course since they support 32bit as an OS, that's any 32bit server with a reasonable number of concurrent users !

The fix should be to modify the sametime.ini file and replace this

[STPresenceSubscriptionsMgr]
STPresenceSubscriptionsMgr_VM_ARGS=-Xmx1024m -Xgcpolicy:gencon -Xcompactgc

with this

[STPresenceSubscriptionsMgr]
STPresenceSubscriptionsMgr_VM_ARGS=-Xmx512m -Xgcpolicy:gencon -Xcompactgc

Then restart.

Thanks. I hope this gets added to a Wiki or kbase.

Other symptoms are question marks appearing in users buddy lists and users then appearing to be logged out and then in again a second later.

Check event viewer, you'll see the ST Presence Subscription service fail and then restart.

It's worth mentioning that the above Sametime.ini change hasn't worked for everyone....

This fix didn't resolve the issue on my Sametime 8.5.1 Domino 8.5.2 / Windows 2008 R2 server.

The issue happens a little less frequently than before, but it still occurs most hours during the working day.
